Luxurious Dog-Friendly Lodging

| posted by cmoon

My husband Brian, our dogs Dakota and Meadow, and I stayed at an amazing lake home on the North Shore. Finding dog friendly lodging is hard enough, let alone luxurious pet friendly accommodations.

If you are looking to rent a pet-friendly cabin or lake home on the North Shore, check out Cascade Vacation Rentals. Their website allows you to search for accommodations with the amenities you need and includes a pet friendly search option.

Before summer slips away, read the story about our stay and view the photo slide show. If you know of other great dog friendly accommodations, please share them here.

Turtle Creek Ranch in

Turtle Creek Ranch in Prairie Farm, Wisconsin, is a wonderful place to bring your family (including dogs). I think you did an article about Turtle Creek in TC Dog. Their website is www.turtlecreekranch.com. Vicki Hoff, the owner, is exceptionally hospitable, available but from a distance. My two teenagers love going to Turtle Creek to escape (surprisingly) the constant activity of the city. Our two dogs check out the animals living on the farm, then quietly accept them. They swim in the pond, run in the fields; it is a wonderful get-away!

Hi Twyla--Thanks for

Hi Twyla--Thanks for participating in Pet Central online and sharing. Yes, I did highlight Turtle Creek Ranch in a previous TC Dog magazine. You have a good memory. And yes, it is an incredible place to stay. And I completely agree, Vicki the owner is great. If interested, Pet Central fans can read about my stay at Turtle Creek.

Dog-friendly B & B's a good

Dog-friendly B & B's a good thing. Always looking for good blogs and good places to go with our dogs. We too, have a dog friendly B & B in Western North Carolina, http://www.pondercove.com. But finding Turtle Creek is wonderful for us. We try to get away once a year and this is perfect as we can pass through Minn. to visit our God children. Thanks so much.

I am wondering if anyone has

I am wondering if anyone has had good experience with boarding their pet (dog) at an overnight facility in Duluth?? I need help finding quality care for 2 dogs for a 3 day stay. We have a family wedding on the Northshore near Silver Bay and have relatives driving in from Dallas Tx with two Golden Retrievers. I board my JRT @ Animal Wellness Center in Maple Grove (an absolutely incredible vet, boarding, spa and wellness center!!) but have no knowledge of Duluth. Help!

Up North But Off-Leash? I

Up North But Off-Leash?

I was quite disappointed by the July 26, 2008 "Goin' Up North" Pet Central article by Pet Central's Editor-at-Large, Cheri Moon. How ironic that after many laudable articles educating us on how to be better, more responsible dog "parents", that she herself would let her dog run loose along the lake shore in a way that contradicts much of the advice which Pet Central publishes.

After reading how one of her dogs ran off-leash, unresponsive to its owner ("Brian's sharp yells for Meadow rang out over the property"), and how it harassed innocent local wildlife ("Meadow ...was dashing along the shore hot on the heels...of a raccoon"), I wondered if Ms. Moon reads her own Pet Central articles? (Or doesn't good canine citizenship apply when you go "up North"?)

Ms. Moon isn't the only offender. Just this summer, while hiking the Oberg Mountain Trail on the Superior Hiking Trail near Lutsen, another owner let his dog run off leash. It killed a just-out-of-the-nest red squirrel and almost killed a new fledgling bird too, not to mention the wildflowers that were torn up in this "Northland romp". (The dog shouldn't be blamed for what it does instinctively -- but the owner should, it is her/his responsibility to ensure their dogs do not run loose in these public settings.)

I've stayed at beautiful Shore Creek and but kept my dog on a leash. I didn't want to take the chance of her running off, getting hit on nearby Hwy 61, disturbing the neighboring cabins (by me yelling to get her back), or encountering wildlife and harming or being harmed in that encounter.

Bringing our dog on vacation is a real joy , all the more in natural settings. I love seeing her smell the scents, and watch the movement of critters in the bushes and branches -- but she does this on a leash.

Dog owners must not take this "pet friendly" privilege for granted. Those who allow their dogs to run loose on vacation have led some "pet friendly" resorts, cabins, parks and preserves to rethink this and start banning dogs altogether (even on a leash). One more complaint from a another guest can ruin it for all of us.

Let's all step up and handle our pets responsibly and respectfully. Please don't spoil it for the rest of us the next time you bring your dog on vacation.

Thanks in advance for your consideration about this.

Hello JKolman--thank you for

Hello JKolman--thank you for participating in Pet Central and sharing your thoughts.

Your below comment is very perceptive.

I'm glad you find the information that Pet Central publishes as credible and educational and are concerned enough to share your thoughts if you read something you believe to be out of character for us.

I appreciate how strongly you feel about keeping dogs on leash and hope that your condemnation of my own very personal decision in this particular instance does not transfer to Pet Central as a whole.

You are right, the information we publish will have different perspectives, as there are many opinions about the best way to be a pet "parent." Some of the information Pet Central features will include stories that writers share about living life with animals—-which will, as has been demonstrated by the replies to this blog, resonate with some and disappoint others.

Take care.
