Pet Peeve: Exercising Dog On Hot Day

Just don’t do it. I’ve blogged in the past about the perils of keeping a dog in the car on a hot day. But after just witnessing someone rollerblading with their dog on a hot afternoon — well, I guess there’s a need to blog about the perils of exercising a dog on a hot day. So, here it goes.

Dogs get hot. Dangerously hot. They don’t have a special organ or ability to process heat better than we do. The problem is, through this blog, I am preaching to the choir. Most of you seem like educated and concerned pet owners.

So the question becomes: How do I get this information to the people who need it? Partly, with your help. So, here’ some nifty facts to share with pet owners who seem to think their dogs can handle the heat:

  • The most dodgy temperatures are not the 90-degree temperatures but the 80s, because we underestimate how overheated our dogs can become.
  • Dogs with dark hair, airway disease, smushed noses (like pugs and bulldogs) and obesity issues are particularly vulnerable.
  • Exercise in the early morning or evening when the temperature is moderate, provide abundant fresh water.
  • Don't make your dog carry his own ball or stick on the walk home as dogs cool off through their mouths.
  • A rule of thumb: don't exercise your dog outside if the sum of air temperature and humidity exceeds 150.

If you have any other suggestions, let me know.

Thanks for the information

Thanks for the information Cheri. I especially appreciate the warning not to exercise if the temp and humidity exceed 150.

You're welcome Twyla. I

This is sound advice. I

This is sound advice. I have a pug and I can hardly walk her on day over 75 degrees, but a lot of dog owners don't seem to understand their own pet's limitations. Side note: a couple of weeks ago on a rather warm day I heard a dog barking when I was leaving Target and I looked around and saw a yellow lab sitting by himself in black SUV with the window cracked so I pulled a piece of paper out of my purse and left the owner a nasty note chastising and educating (I hope). It made me feel better. Anyway, I would suggest saying something. I will continue to do so, and I don't care if they want my advice or not.

Nice work Sarah! You are

Nice work Sarah! You are right, education is the key.

Would someone be willing to

Would someone be willing to design a basic (non-cluttered) eye catching flyer in the form of a pdf warning of the dangers of exercising dogs on hot days? I think some people just dont know.
I think if there was a pdf we could download, we could put them up on bulletin boards in parks/coffee shops. I think it would help some.
If someone would be willing to make one, or just send me some some facts, perhaps I could make one. I'd be willing to put them up around town. tommyrehbein@gmail.com thanks

I exercise my dogs everyday

I exercise my dogs everyday regardless of the weather. They let me know when they are done, and we always bring a gallon of cold water with us wherever we go. They are two 83 pound labs - they love it. On the hotter days it doesn't take as long to get them the exercise they need - sometimes it is only 10-15 minutes, other days they want to stick it out for 30-45. When they get to swim on hot days we play for 1-2 hours.
Just use common sense.
One key I use for the one that loves to run non-stop is I listen to his breathing - if he is starting to wheeze or it sounds like a flap in his throat (skin flap) then we settle down for a while until he chills out, he usually takes his ball and goes in the shade anyway....

I have two shepherd dogs

I have two shepherd dogs that i do not walk on hot days, they seem to get weak and wont eat. and all the pet pics on this site are beautiful.
